What to do…when you don’t know what to do for your ShihTzu

What to do…when you don’t know what to do. All those symptoms should fit some illness, right? Some things are fairly easy to correct by yourself with the right amount of knowledge about your breed. Here I can only “help” and I won’t try to diagnose any situation.

Clearly it is best to call your local veterinarian ASAP! Better to be safe than sorry goes along with that visit to your vet. Some things are fairly common and easy to treat, and some things only a vet can tell you what’s wrong. When the pup has what sounds like a dry throat, with gasping and dry coughing, our first thought could be kennel cough, but it may be the pup has swallowed something. If you can’t get to a vet quick enough, use some children’s cough syrup… but do go to the vet as soon as you can.

When the pup has a tough time pooping, clean the butt thoroughly and cut away the hair near the butt. Also a little mineral oil inserted with a syringe up the butt helps to move the bowels. If it continues, see your vet.

When your pup cries constantly it may simply be calling out for some lovin, or it may be in pain. Determine this with gently picking up the pup as you try to check for any outward signs of discomfort. If the pup stops crying, maybe it was just craving some holding. But if your pup still cries then it may be internal and your vet will have to determine if there is blockage, lack of nourishment or dehydration.

The larger the Shih Tzu or Shih Poo…the less problems occur. With the smaller ones hypoglycemia can happen rapidly. Temperature changes can affect the smaller Shih Tzu more than the larger ones. You should have some vitamin paste in your puppy medicine cabinet for such emergencies.

Make the pup drink drink, drink, drink, & drink!!!! Dehydration can cause a quick death for tiny puppies.

Constant shaking of the head and scratching the ears and whining usually is a sign of ear mites. This problem is easily treated with ear cleansers and by keeping the ear canal clear of hair growth. You can also purchase over the counter ear mite treatment. Walmart sells a pkg of three very small tubes that work very well.

When the pup is itching their coat incessantly it could be as simple as dandruff. Dandruff shampoos work great on pups too. Also, changing your pups dog food to one that has more omega oils can help. Adding oils to their food is another way to keep their coat in good health. Your vet can suggest many remedies for this as well.

While I do highly recommend you visit your veterinarian for most ailments, studying your pup will help you get to know their nuances and you can probably handle a lot of their minor ailments yourself. You will gain more experience by listening to your vet as he explains remedies during your regular visits.

How long does food stay in the in the intestines of a pup? And….why should you care?

Over feeding our pups is a common bad habit. Thinking the pup must be hungry when they beg or look at you with those adoring eyes imploring you to give them a treat? Put more food on top of that and what have you succeded at…perhaps a little weight gain here and there. Over time, your pup is more heftier than it should be.

Most often a cup a day is more than sufficient. I get questions about the amount to feed the mature dog quite a lot.

My first Veterinarian, Dr. Bob, taught me so very much about basics that guide me to this day.
I had asked to have an x-ray on one of my mama’s to see how many babies she was having. Dr. Bob told me not to feed her after 6 the day before bringing her in. Well in the morning I felt sorry for her and let her have a few kibbles. When Dr. Bob told me it was difficult to determine how many babies after taking the X-ray, I asked why. He calmly said she has too much food in her and it blocks the view. I said I only gave a few kibbles. He showed me the x-ray. Her belly was full. It wasn’t full from the few kibbles I had given her. It was still full from the previous day’s meal. Her allowance per day was a cup. She had not eaten after 6 the night before. The few kibbles I gave her amounted to about 10 kibbles.

What I had learned thru that x-ray episode was really how long the pups ”store” that food.  Well, it is actually 18 hours. Then if more is added before the other is eliminated…well,  I suppose we all can guess that is how the pups get that added weight.  I no longer “overfeed” my pups. I have that x-ray imprinted in memory every time I see that begging look. And that is what helps me stay strong from the treat spoiling. They get their cup and at night I give them each two of those tiny Cesars softies treats. So all my pups are lean and healthy and always energetic and if you take a look at their bellies during the day you can see the belly “puff” is still full of food.

How do I teach a lickin pup enough’s enough?

Licking says I love you, incessant licking says I own you.
So often I’m asked how do I teach a lickin pup enough’s enough?
This is what I hear:

My puppie won’t stop licking me.  My arms, legs, hands and face get a scrubbing each time I’m near my the little angel.
When I tell my pup that’s enough, he/she won’t stop licking me.  Sitting on the sofa makes my pup think “Oh goody, I get to lick again!”.   What am I to do?

Believe it or not, your pup is playing the alpha role and he/she is winning. Your pup has you figured out!  The constant non stop licking is their way of “owning you”.  What started as a sweet side effect of having a puppie, has become an annoying trait that needs re-training.  Just a few licks is enough. It’s not easy letting your pup know when to stop.

I know this all too well, first hand, cause I’m one of the culprits that chose to coo-coo the sweetness of the puppie kisses.  Not all my angels became incessant lickers,  but a few have decided that’s their method for attention and their cravings became insatiable.  I have worked on stopping this and have succeeded in most cases.

Chastising the pup for licking doesn’t work, and the scolding gives you a guilt trip.  First of all, step back and remember, you taught him/her that you loved those “kisses”… now you’re changing your mind?  Confusing the poor pup gets you no where.  However, it’s never too late to lovingly show your pup that too much licking does NOT please you.  From day one, of course, it really is hard to stop all those kisses when you are so hungry for the love from your new pup,  but that really is when it should start.  OK, OK, we’re past those first days of sweet love exchanges.  Please, relax, those endearing licks can be curtailed… slowly.

When your pup begins those first licks… let him/her do it along with your nuzzling them, holding them and cooing to them.  That’s what the new pup needs and wants.   When you’ve had enough, that is, once you have given the pup the loving moments of praise and attention they do require, change your behavior and get busy being busy.  Ignore the pup.  Go about doing what you have to do or get some dusting done cause stopping this will take repetition.

Ignoring the pup is essential.  Going about your dusting, we’re using dusting as an example here, the pup is stumbling all over trying to lick your legs and jump up on you.  Hum a little song, but do not coo or offer any attention to the pup whatsoever.  Keep your legs jiggling this way and that,  (great for muscle toning)  so the pup stays back and can’t get close enough to lick.

The pup finally tires of your act and goes to sit down.  Let the pup alone, I mean, pay no attention to him/her at all.

Sit in a chair, not the sofa, and pick up a magazine, pretend to browse those pages, your pup will think it’s time to join you.   OK, here is where we do leg lifts while sitting.  Again, think of a song and hum it or sing it,  music can be good for the soul, so relax, you’re doing both you and the pup a favor.

Repetition of this method of ignoring the pup relates the message that this isn’t the time for their “affection”.  The pup is only trying to offer what he thinks you want.  Remember, you’re the one that started this mess, not the pup.  Correcting this is going to take possibly days and weeks of the same “dancing” routine, also known as fast leg movements, just to keep the pup from getting near enough to lick.  After 3 weeks of this, your mirror will reward you with more well toned legs and your pup will reward you by giving up chasing those fast moving objects.

The facial licks/kisses:  Each time pup begins this, quickly jerk your head (also a great muscle stimulation for your neck and shoulders).  Don’t gripe, just continue.  Rejuvenation of your bones will be your reward.

What have you got to lose by trying these tricks?  Your personal gain is a more flexible body and bending comes mush easier.  Each step gets easier… so get started re-training the angel.  You can limit the holding and loving time until this annoying habit is replaced with the relaxed pup now at ease and happy to just sit with you.  You have years to enjoy your pup, so please take the time to retrain your angel… they’re worth it!

A balance is necessary, too much babying will start it all back up again.  Remember the guilt is in your own mind,  the pup really is rewarded just knowing you are in the same room.  So, let go of the guilt, be happy, sing and dance, jerk your head left to right and enjoy a pup that no longer gives you more licks then you’ll allow.

How soon can I walk my new Shih Tzu or Shih Poo puppie?

This one usually bristles me. Reading up on your breed is so utmost important when deciding to purchase a pup.
The Shih Tzu are lap dogs. The Shih Tzu is not your jogging companion, nor your brisk morning or evening walking companion. However, according to the size of your new Shih Tzu pup, you can walk the pup within a limited time period. A harness with a leash is the only method that should be used when walking your Shih Tzu. Not a collar and leash. The Shih Tzu are indoor pups and were not bred to require exercise other than their playtime exercise in the home. Heat and Cold affect the Shih Tzu pup more drastically that most other breeds. Dehydration is quick to occur on the Shih Tzu pup during any type of exertion. Be cautious, use due diligence and monitor your pup carefully. Also see next article.

Why No Anxiety when walking a new puppie or a newly acquired older dog?

Walking a new puppie or a newly acquired older dog.

Let’s treat them the same!

Why? Because these pups are experiencing the same fears and the same strange environments.

Relax yourself  before you even attempt to do your walk with a Shih Tzu or a Shih-Poo. Your pup wants to willingly follow wherever you go…attach something to its body and the pup says …that thing is restricting my fun. Soft, slow, calm guidance in a super relaxed mood with NO ANXIETY is your secret to each successful walking experience.

New owners, new surroundings along with new commands can confuse a puppie. Trust is paramount for the successful walking trip. Trust doesn’t happen the moment you plop down the money to pay for the pup. We need to create the correct atmosphere to begin training your pup to walk with a leash. It isn’t just a matter of putting on the harness.

Take the time to introduce your pup to a harness. There are various sizes available and you can take your pup to be sized for their harness at different pet shops. Let your pup wear the harness around the house for a few days to a week prior to trying the leash and walking. You’ll soon realize the pup shows no signs of discomfort with the harness and has become acclimated to it. At this time a few steps inside the rooms of your home will be an easy introduction to the leash.

Forget the idea of a mile walk with your Shih Tzu…read up on this breed please. They were not bred to be exercise dogs. Shih Tzu and Shih Poo’s suffer heat exhaustion VERY QUICKLY! A little jaunt to the mail box or the neighbors house up the street is all you should walk your Shih Tzu pup anyway. Do remember the water break, carry a doggie water bottle with you for a cooling and refreshing drink during your pet walk.

Consider the likeness of treating this pup as your human baby learning it’s first steps. Isn’t it nice seeing those first steps where the “baby” doesn’t fall and cry. Calmly encouraging the “baby” with your praise, your obvious rewards are tremendous. Time and patience with training your Shih Tzu or Shih Poo to accept their harness and leash will offer bonding and build trust.

PLEASE! It all comes under the heading Love. A bond and a forever home for your new pup will be your reward.

A note: Do not consider taking your pup outdoors until they are finished their required sets of shots (4). Prior to the completion of these shots your new puppie is a parasite magnet. So please have patience and wait.

How Soon Should I Take My Pup To The Groomers?

Well, when I’m asked that, I have to say how much grooming are you willing to do for your pup?
So the answer depends on you as well. If we are talking only about hair growth then we can probably give 5 months old as your first cutting. Thereafter about every 4 months, give or take a few weeks.

But Grooming isn’t just about the length of hair on your Shih Tzu pup. Bonding times are beautiful moments with your pup and can happen in many forms. Grooming the pup is a very tender bonding time. There are many areas of your pups body that need frequent care sometimes daily sometimes just weekly. In and around the ears, eyes, mouth, paw pads and nails, groin area and anal glands.

Trimming the hair around your pups eyes is so beneficial to their well being in keeping bacteria away from the eyes including scratches and irritations from the hair.

Inside the pups ears hair grows pretty fast. This can lead to a nice home for mites. So there are products on the market to help with caring for your pups ears as well. Ear powder is so terrific for pulling the ear hair out without hurting the pup. Never cut the hair inside the ear. That doesn’t clear the ear. The pup has ear wax the same as we do, but don’t put a cotton swab in their ear…ever. Keeping the ears cleansed with ear cleanser and the cleaning pads that are sold is a very good method of avoiding mites.

Don’t let the mustache on the pup to grow so long that it starts wrapping around your pups teeth. Keep it trimmed.

Trimming the groin area of both male and female pups is so important as well. The pee will linger on the hair around their privates and that isn’t sanitary at all.

Around the pups Butt must be trimmed as well. Sometimes you may see their butt area looks a little puffy. This might be the indicator that their anal glands need squeezed. Using a clock as a sort of guide for you…4 o’clock and 8 o’clock is where you will place your fingers to squeeze. BUT, do this squeezing at a laundry sink or outside.
The spray that comes from the gland as you squeeze has a fantastically strong fishy odor. The spray goes everywhere too. So don’t be facing the pup when you do this. Stand aside and squeeze.

Keeping the paw pads trimmed to the pads is important so the feet don’t hold moisture which can be another hiding place for bacteria. Since pups use their paws for scratching and playing…let’s keep those paw pads free of hair growth. It also makes it easier for them to walk on the smooth and slippery kitchen floor!

The nails seems to be everyone’s main concern. There is a membrane called a Quick behind or under the curve of the nail that if you put your finger there and rub softly you will feel it. So when you are trimming the nails use that as a guide to not go past that Quick. On the safer side, just cut the tips more frequently. The bonding is wonderful. Do have on hand a product called STOP BLEED. It is a power that will stop the bleeding if you happen to cut into the Quick area.  This is the reason a lot of dogs do not want their nails trimmed. Cutting into the Quick hurts.

When you take the time to do this at the earliest stages of owning your pup, you will see it becomes second nature to the pups and the pup just accepts this is their grooming time with you.

How soon can I let my new Shih Tzu or Shih Poo puppie sleep with me?

That question tops as number one on the list of most often asked.
My answer would have to be quite individual to the pup and to you and your sleeping habits.
My reaction to the question is to respond with the remark…immediately.  But that’s not the best response.  It really is a case by case answer.   I purchase almost all my males and I like to place one of the extra small crates on my nightstand and have the pups next to me for a few nights.  He usually looks about and is very curious as to what makes up “my world” and his “new world”.  This way he gets used to his new environment while in his “den”.  He is still with me, able to watch me and my comings and goings.  In the mornings I place them on the bed with me and lay back down with them and let them get used to being on the bed in the daylight.  Most often after 3-4-5 days they are in bed with me thru the night.  Very rarely do I have an instance of a pup falling or jumping off the bed if I do it this way.

How soon can I have my friends and family over to meet the new Shih Tzu puppie?

I always say, step into the shoes of a brand new human mother and grasp how careful and guarded she is as to who gets to hold her baby and when. Please do, yes, do…treat you new puppie like a brand new baby, remember to count the actual days the pup has been alive and that should jolt your mind as to what you might be subjecting the pup to. Usually when you come to pick up your pup, that pup has been alive for about 60-75 days.

Thrust the pup too quickly into the outside world and you may find you have a few trips to the veterinarians cause puppie isn’t feeling so great. So again, use caution, and lots of thought behind each new introduction to anything.

How soon can I bathe my Shih tzu or Shih-Poo puppie?

I’d prefer that you wait at least one to two days after picking up the new puppie. That way they’ve adjusted somewhat to their new environment. Remember, this young puppie is trying real hard to trust you and bond with you, so timing is everything. Waiting for a bath should not be a priority during the pups first week with you.

What can I use on my Shih Tzu…It’s hair is so dry?

A natural variety of dog food…the best you can afford, get a recommendation from your local vet.
If the hair is dry, then the pup is missing  something from their diet.
Use a quality Shampoo and Mat Detangler. (Dianne suggest the Chris Christensen systems such as Ice On Ice.)

How soon can I treat my pups eyes for tear stains?

The first answer is right away.  Keeping your pup clean doesn’t always mean a full bath.
The face can get dirty pretty quickly….but speaking of treating tear stains….I will answer this with “If you must”.
I personally prefer not to medicate the eye area for tear stains. If  you have decided that looking at the reddish tint around the eyes is something you can’t tolerate, then my suggestion is a prescription from your veterinarian called Poly-Otic.  This is a powder you dust over the pups food and it develops in the pups system to end the tear stains.

Dark colored pups have the same tears and you don’t see the stains.  But on most all of the pups the tear stains can be washed everyday or every other day so bacteria doesn’t affect the eye area.  There is a shampoo for the face of pups that is called SPA, I get it thru PetEdge, an online catalog.  I like it and it works so well that the time spent having to wash their faces can be once a week on most of my pups.  It is like a retardant that cleanses the area but also works to arrest any foul odors caused by the bacteria.

How soon can I start my Shih Tzu or Shih Poo pup on flea treatment?  Heart worm  Prevention?

Puppy’s can start the heartworm prevention medication at 8 weeks old.  Thereafter once every month it should be given.

Veterinarians vary in their opinions on this.  I’ve heard wait till they finish their shots and I’ve heard begin with the first shot.  When you select your veterinarian, talk about the choices available and age recommendation.  For those of you who like the Humanitarian Society and or the Pet Marts that offer shots, the staff there are most always educated and welcome your questions.

How soon can I take my Shih Tzu or Shih Poo puppie outside for potty training?

The pros and cons of potty training are enormous and would take forever to decipher each method.
Outside training is the easiest by far.  But a clean yard is so paramount to your pups health.  If another dog, cat, rabbit, mouse, etc., just went where you are taking your pup…your pup’s nose will be attracted to that area and believe me, the parasites are yelling at one another saying, “Let the party begin, we’ve got ourselves another playground”.  Referring to your pups immune system.  Parasites can wreck havoc on a small puppie.
So with caution, due diligence, monitoring carefully where the pups goes, get back inside after the pup is finished. Using Potty Pads and waiting until they’re finished their shots and the immune system is stronger, is the preferred method.

What is their personality and disposition?

Every Shih Tzu has a unique personality and disposition. However, generally, they are sweet and calm. When picked up and held they seem to melt into you and cherish their holding time greatly. Their playfulness is adorable and quite often hilarious. They can be stubborn at times, but hopefully your heart accepts all of their traits, “in sickness and in health, for better or for worse, for however long you both shall live”!

Whether you want a young Shih Tzu, Shih-Poo or an older one, talk with me and I’ll help in your decision to choose your Shih Tzu or Shih-Poo with love and compassion.

What’s the difference between Single and Double Coated Shih Tzu

What is a single coat, and What is a double coat?

What are the Pro’s & Con’s on each coat type?

A double coat is a thick coat on your pup. And a single coat is a thin coat.

For example some of us are blessed with thick full hair while others have thin fine hair.

There are pluses and minuses on both types. The single coat on a puppy is easier to maintain as the matting is minimal.

Is there a breed called Imperials?

Really…There is no breed called Imperial Shih Tzu. The word Imperial is a glorious word for tiny, small, or runt. In the case of Poodles and some other small breeds the word teacup describes tiny. In Shih Tzu, because of their Chinese heritage, the word Imperial defines size: meaning very tiny at 8 weeks and still under 2lbs, with adult size usually staying under 9lbs. But at no time can we guarantee what the adult size will be, it is always estimated.

Can you explain what and where are Dew Claws?

Sometimes they appear on all four paws, especially with Shih Tzu. It is my firm belief God’s decision to give them to my pups is not mine to take away.

The irony is that within the very same litter there may be 2 pups with dew claws only on the front while one other pup has the dew claws on all four paws and yet another will have only three paws with the dew claws.

Grooming your Shih Tzu dew claws is really no different than grooming the other nails. It is simply a matter of being cognizant to remember to trim them. If you forget, the dew claw nail can get long and curl back around. That’s not good, so simply pay attention to your pups nails altogether.

Groomers like to complain that it is extra work, I would poo-poo that with I’ll take my pup elsewhere then. As far as being a danger to the pup, that too rarely applies to Shih Tzu. Shih Tzu were not bred to be exercise dogs and were indeed bred to be house pets made purposely for the lap….that being said the dew claw rarely disturbs this breed.

What shampoo you recommend ?

I was wondering what shampoo you recommend for Trigger? Also, do you blow dry or let them dry naturally?

Thanks, Rhonda

reply~~

Hi Rhonda, thanks for the update on “my lil boy”…I knew he would be happy!

I like to let them dry naturally in warmer climate but in colder climate I’ll blow dry them.

As far as a shampoo…according to your bathing habits….a daily rinse, if need be, can accomplish enough.

If you are frequently bathing, which is not advised, a well diluted shampoo will suffice.

The Shih Tzu does not require frequent bathing…they are house dogs…not outdoors…sooo dust can be rinsed off, a potty accident can be rinsed off. They really don’t get “dirty”. Every 4 months a bath is adequate.

Mild puppie shampoos are on the market and I truly don’t have a favorite. However, in “flea” season, my adult pups get a flea and tick shampoo. My tiny angels get a dilution of whitening shampoo if their coats have a lot of white in it. Other wise a lot of the organic shampoo’s work well…but do dilute it.

Your concern is stripping the oils from the pups skin. Frequent washing can cause itching, dandruff, uncomfortable dry skin irritation for the pup.

So be generous with your care of their skin too…rinsing very well several times over and over with clear water is really all they need. People are the ones looking for a “fresh smell”…so be considerate of too much fragrance as well. I hope this helps….

Dog Dandruff

What should I do about dandruff on my pets backside? It is really bad and when you pet him the dandruff gets all over me and everything.

You should see the new shine coming in on my pups coats! Major WOW! Only able to purchase this food at the pet food chain stores such as PetSmart, PetSupermarket etc.

I have a couple of my angels that have dandruff also. It is easily maintained with a dandruff shampoo. I variate on the shampoo with what is on sale, head and shoulders and store brand dandruff shampoo work well. These pups need bathing weekly to keep the dandruff in check.

Tear Stains

I currently have a shih tzu puppy and thanks to Jannie, my family will be welcoming a second puppy for Christmas. With my current puppy I have an extremely hard time removing the tear stains around his eyes. He is very light in color so when I look at his face it looks dirty. I read online to cut down on beef (My pup is on lamb and rice formula) and add a little Apple Cider Vinegar to their water (I have tried this for about a week) without much improvement). Besides the pricey products such as Angel Eyes is their any other way to prevent and/or clean these tear stains? Our Christmas puppy is mostly white and I want to have some knowledge of how to fix this before I bring her home.

reply ~~

My Vet suggested Poly-Otic. It is far better than Angel Eyes and the other over the counter stain removers. Ask your vet about it. The dose is just a pinch a day on their food. And I can tell you it is great and works!

On Ear Hair and Wax-My dog grows potatoes in her ears!

I noticed my pup had a big glob of ear wax like dirt in her ear. I was pretty upset as I thought I kept her well groomed. How does this happen? She’s an inside dog?

reply ~~

Our pups are so much like us as far as cleanliness. The inside ear hair needs to be plucked so as not to let the gummy like substance take hold. It is a build up of earwax. It’s just nature and needs attending too. There are ears wipes for daily cleaning and also an ear powder to help pull out the hair.

Can you answer this question?……

Treatment for loss of appetite in Shihtzu ?

The loss of appetite can vary with the reason why, obviously circumstances that brought it on can be many.
Loss of a human or animal friend can trigger a loss of appetite along with depression.
An internal infection or pain may cause the pup to lose the appetite.
The moods of the pups owner can also attribute to whether the pup eats correctly or at all.
Since there are undetermined factors here, it is difficult to answer this question with one answer for all symptoms.
When in doubt see your veterinarian.

Change of food may be an alternative for awhile. As the pup gets back to a good schedule weening the pup
on a gradual basis can bring them back to a quality dog food to stabilize the eating habits.

Yes. Distractions with toys, rawhide is a must. Usually they need a handful of the rawhide to choose their “one” to chew on. Please please buy that bag.

Good that she sleeps with you. Great bonding. She obviously misses her siblings. Start right away with ten minute intervals in her crate with her chosen piece of rawhide and a small stuffed toy, a squeaker toy. Then leave the room or even the house. She’ll cry but this is such a must to acclimate her in your home to being crated.

It shows you are alpha. Right now she is showing you she’s dominant by getting her way. She needs to learn to let you be doing things about the home, she can follow you, but without being picked up cause she cries. You are teaching her independence.

New Owner…
Great advice.. Thanks.. Can she go with me to pet supermarket or is it too soon? She’s such a little lover!

Jannie’s reply…
No please don’t expose her.
This is a good time for her to be in the crate while you are gone. Just remember that when you come home and this is urgent …do not even make eye contact with her and do not say her name. Simply hum a happy tune. Do kissy sounds, don’t look at her and then after five minutes gently and very nonchalantly pick her up without to much fuss. Sit in a chair with her and pet her lovingly.

This is so very important to always do when you come home. It helps to stop separation anxiety. Try to think of her as a new born baby regarding exposing her.

New Owner…
Ok she’s settling down a little after I let her explore the house..do I let her out of the crate as soon as I get home?

Jannie’s reply…
No. I just wrote you what to do. Do not even look at her. She needs to know you can be home without her being the center of All of you. Believe me you’ll be glad you did this routine.

New Owner…
Thank you so much!! I didn’t do it right with my last Shihtzu and she got her way all the time which was awful for me! I want to do all the right things this time!!! Hoping she will take a long nap this afternoon..so mommy can have one too.
Jannie.. You’re the best! I really appreciate your advice!
I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to have you available to get her off to a good start!

Jannie’s reply…

It’s a been there, made that mistake n learned the right way thru trial and error in my nine years of watching it work correctly.
And now being able to pass it on helps me feel rewarded.

New Owner…
Thank goodness for you! I feel like a new mom!

Jannie’s reply…
I understand. It’s all new and you get to enjoy her. Just ask me anything.

New Owner…
Thanks again Jannie.. I’ll keep you posted!
Amazing!!! When I came home she was quiet in the cage.. I ignored her for 5 mins and took her out and cuddled.. She loves the rawhide and she’s calm right now! You are a genius!

Jannie’s reply…
It works. It actually makes them know you are alpha. Just like a child needs rules and boundaries so does the puppie. It’s called tough love.

New Owner…
I’ll try it again later so we can work toward her sleeping in the crate at nite.. I was afraid I’d crush her!

Jannie’s reply…
I personally think if you could have her in your bed, then that’s kinda better. But that’s your choice. You could alternate nites. Or give her nap time during the day with you on your bed. As soon as I pretend to close my eyes, my pups take their naps with me.

New Owner…
Oh good! I need a nap!!😍😍😍 she’s still so tiny.. I weighed her in at 2.8 lbs!! Small but mighty!
And so adorable. And so so cuddly too.
Amazingly cuddly .. My bichon was not a cuddler..she stayed away ..but a Shih Tzu is a different story! Yummy

Hello!   I like the Anti-Itch Spray. Oxy-Med is the best but there are others on the market as well. Literally and liberally spray the pup where he itches and of course he will try to wipe it off. I put mine in a crate with a clean fresh fleece bedding pad…cause they’ll rub themselves all over the pad….that’s a good thing cause now the pad is gonna actually help him as well. First time try it in the afternoon then if all is well with that episode do it nightly for a few nights. If he sleeps with you then just do it it the afternoons.
It really works well for me.

Hi Jannie,
I purchased my female ShihTzu in January.
I had no problem with trimming her nails as a puppy.
Now she turned 1yr old and will not let me cut them.
Please help. How should I do it?
I don’t want to take her to groomer or vet cause I lost my
last shih Tzu when they restrained her & she struggled.
She is about 6.5lbs and very lively, we love her very much.
Please let me know what’s the best way to do it.
Thank you….

Reply……You’ll have to do tough love.
You struggle right back and force her sitting position.
Hold the nail clipper ( first go buy a different kind than
what she’s used to seeing you use).

Just sit there with nail clippers in hand.
Then when she is calm put her down and say good girl.
An hour or so later. Pick her up and you are building trust.
Then clip one or two tips off the nails.
Put her down and say good girl. But only put her down when she is calm.
Never while she is struggling. You have to be alpha.
I’m here to help with your puppy issues. Tough love has great rewards.
